Hi everyone.
This is my super report on Big Basin.
On a December
1st morning we all met
at Sacred Heart in the very cool (below 40 degree) weather. We were all
ready for the day of hiking in the drizzling rain hiking ahead of us. We
had a large group of 19 scouts and 5 leaders. We also had all of our
equipment, but not all of it made it to the campground because we forgot it
in the cars L.
We carried full packs 5.5 miles to the Sunset campground. Our weather
consisted of a cloudy sky with periods of sunshine. On the way we hiked
through a control burning (a fire started by firemen to get rid of dead
undergrowth), which gave off plenty of warmth in this cool day. It started
to drizzle when we got to the campsite. Our campground was surrounded by
huge old growth redwoods in the middle of a forest far away from
civilization. Everyone helped put up 6 tarps, which is a higher than usual
number. All of the cooking was done on propane stoves and the stupid senior
scouts mooched on our perfect food and, as always, they claimed there would
be a prize for the best food, and did they give us a prize? NO! There was
no campfire that night because it was restricted but there was still a group
gathering with some skits and loud singing. Mr. McHale and Mr. Reneau slept
under the stars (and rain) to give up their tarps for other patrols like the
Senior Patrol. Again they messed up, what’s their problem? On the 8-mile
returning hike we passed many beautiful waterfalls and got to pick up little
red salamanders. The last group saw a bobcat pass their path which is a
beautiful and very rare event. When we got through the forest we could see
the sun reflecting off of the ocean and it got much windier. We would have
returned home much earlier if it was not for the
scout-who-shall-not-be-named who was slow and got many blisters on his feet
and decided to actually lay down on the path a couple of times. I hope that
he learned his lesson! At Waddell Beach,
we passed the carabineer in the cold windy air before returning home. This
is one of the most beautiful and rewarding trips of the year.
