OLJATO SUMMER CAMP

  (July 7 – 14, 2007)

On July 7th, Troop 206 left by bus for Camp Oljato.  For our troop this was a good turn out, with a total of 26 scouts and 7 adults.  Mr. Hardy attended as Scoutmaster and S. Rhodes was attending as our new SPL.  The camp store was not as nice as the one at Emerald Bay but they did have their very own way of serving candy.  It is called “Oljato Style” and involves hitting a bell with a rubber mallet and then pounding the candy until is smashed up or ground into little itty-bitty bits.  The food at Oljato was very good for camp food. Some of the most memorable meals at camp included the meat loaf, turkey dinner, and pizza!  Some of the scouts that went to camp the previous years at Oljato say that the food not quite as good as when Leonard was the head chef.  This year’s head cook was Dennis and his food was still good but unfortunately late on Thursday evening a boat capsized with three kitchen staff members on board.  Two people were rescued but Dennis was missing.  This is why you should ALWAYS where a PFD (personal flotation device).  In addition to work on merit badges you could do other activities such as the mile swim, dodge ball, and hockey, just to name a few.  In our troop there were four people who swam the mile in the cold lake water, and we were at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet!  Our mile swimmers were S. Rhodes, S. Gregory, Mr. Paul Osborn, and J. Divita.  Thursday evening was very exiting for the majority of the scouts who played Zorch.  Zorch is a game which involved running up a hill and climbing rocks to kick a can over.  The staff and the winner of each game got to sit up on a house and flash people with a flashlight.  The problem with Zorch was that many scouts got injured including our very own H. Osborn.  During the campfires all of the staff were very energetic and over-excited with kicking each other in their chests.  Somehow every time they got kicked they would get right back up without injury!  The biggest event of the week was Olympicade.  Most years Troop 206 comes in first but this year we came in second to Troop 37.  The two Olympicade events that we did win were Hockey (C. McBirney and G. Shaffer) and tower building (the two Vs.=DeZutti and Koeten).  Camp Oljato was a wonderful experience and I would guess that most of the troop would like to go back for another year at Oljato.
