Mt. Madonna State Park (September 22-23, 2007)

To start our new year of Scouting, we went to Mt. Madonna State Park near Gilroy.  We had a nice two mile hike in full packs in a light rain through the park to our overnight destination.  Our campsite had a distinct name called Indian Rock; it got its name from the rocks in the campsite which had large holes from the Native Americans grinding acorns into flour.  An unusual but necessary attribute to our learning was a tarp inspection conducted by our very own Mr. McHale.  All of the new scouts earned their Toten Chip in the ax yard and went crazy over their earned reward.  David Calbert , our scout in charge, played his guitar around the campfire along with Jordan V.  Our turnout for the weekend was very delightful with 22 scouts and 7 adult leaders attending.  Sadly we had some scouts who chose not to come because they were scared of the rain.  Boo Hoo!  They missed a great trip.  For the usual scout menu, the patrols had Pop Tarts, eggs and bacon for breakfast.  Before we left camp we passed the carabineer, in which the person holding the carabineer tells everyone about something that they really liked about the outing. The scouts and leaders hiked out five miles without packs to end the adventure.

Additional comments for Summer Camp:

It was very motivating to see how many scouts made significant progress as
scouts (skills, maturity, etc.).  Several scouts signed up to be Ojaito
staff next year, and several others announced their decision to become an
Eaglee scout.  Several other scouts transitioned to spontaniously and
actively assisting junior scouts - without any adult prompting.

Also, it's fun to see scouts "buddy up" and spend afternoons playing
ping-pong, jumping off of the swimming platform into the COLD lake,
carrying each other's gear, etc.

All-in-all, a great week w/o cell phones, TVs, computers...just scouts
having fun at camp.
